Insulin Resistance
On September 5th, 2005, U.S. News and World Report sounded the alarm. Affecting 70 million Americans, a common disorder known as insulin resistance can be linked to the biggest killers. This is no coincidence.
Acting as a biological escort service, insulin carries glucose and other nutrients into the fat and muscle cells to be used as fuel. When insulin resistance sets in, these cells resist glucose and it remains in the bloodstream. In response, the pancreas releases more insulin.
The combination of high blood glucose and insulin sets the stage for a metabolic nightmare. Excess insulin causes the kidneys to retain salt – hypertension results. Excess insulin cogs the metabolic wheel – obesity results. Excess glucose catalyzes the production of artery-damaging and brain-clogging compounds known as advanced glycated end (AGE) products – heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease result. Excess insulin stimulates cancer growth like gas on a fire – tumors result. Excess insulin triggers androgen production in women – infertility results.
The greatest health catastrophe ever recorded, insulin resistance is projected to cause the first reduction in the average life expectancy in 200 years. Victims will erase at least 10 years of their lives if not addressed.
Habits create and eradicate disease. And this is especially true for insulin resistance. A disorder of poor lifestyle and nutrition habits rather than a rogue virus or bacteria, reversing insulin resistance is simply a matter of embracing new healthy habits. Once done, insulin is controlled. Suffering from insulin resistance is nothing more than a bad dream.
Controlling insulin levels confers other health benefits. Physician David Katz, Director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale Medical School, suggests that learning how to regulate insulin could be the master control of all disease. This includes heart disease, Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Knowledge of how to reverse insulin resistance is the long-awaited panacea that Americans have been searching for.
As of 2005, Americans stand on the threshold of the most sweeping health revolution in history. For the first time since the rise of prescription drug tyranny, science has made it abundantly clear that health freedom can be procured via simple lifestyle habits – not drugs.
